south dakota - east river

Although the eastern half of South Dakota contains the state's largest towns, a healthy business climate, and varied industries, Gary's focus is on the rural, specifically the landscapes connected with farms and small towns.

south dakota - west river

When broad terms are used to
characterize South Dakota, the western
half is typically labeled “ranch country” (as
opposed to East River farms) and in fact
much of West River consists of open
prairies and range land dotted with
ranches. Though some of Gary’s paintings
are of these environments (and more will
be), his current focus is on landscapes in
the Black Hills, a 6,000 square mile island
of trees and mountains on the western
border of the state.

beyond the borders

Beyond the border can mean a step
across any South Dakota border to get
landscapes from, say, Minnesota or
Wyoming, etc. Or it can mean a journey to
a fishing village in Maine, the Adirondacks,
Houston's refineries and harbors, or...?

posters and prints

Currently only two reproductions are
available through this site. They’re from a
series “Images of Place” created in
collaboration with the poet laureate of
South Dakota, David Allan Evans, to
celebrate rural life in South Dakota. Each
contains a “pairing,” a poem by Evans and
a painting by Steinley. The nature of the
pairings vary, but in the posters available
Evans studied the paintings, “Winter
Greens” and “Spearfish Falls Sculpture,”
as virtual landscapes that ignited
memories and images of his past resulting
in the poems “Abandoned Car in Winter”
and “Spearfish Falls.”

commissions

Some of Gary’s commissions are rather
general (such as “we want a panoramic
view of a valley in the Black Hills”), but
most are more focused—paintings, for
example of the family farm or a treasured
monument on the farm (such as a
battered windmill). When possible, these
are done on site, but they can be done
from photos. Contact Gary for a price list
and commission procedure.
